The Er:glass laser works at an infrared wavelength that is strongly absorbed by the water in body tissue. It is unaffected by skin colour as it is not absorbed by the melanin in the skin. Its main use at the Cosmex Clinic is for the revision of scars of all types.
Er:glass is a non-ablative fractional treatment that uses an array of micro beams of infrared light to denature the dermis within the scar tissue in order to promote the growth of new collagen and elastin. This process will start to produce results within a week and will continue over the following months.
Typically a course of three treatments will be required with treatments at 4-5 week intervals.
Following treatment the treated area will usually appear red and there can be some swelling but no long lasting effects.
The treated area should be protected by an SPF 50 or better sun cream throughout the course of treatment if exposed to sunlight.
